LONDON,
(CAIS) -- Illegal diggers have excavated all the
graves in the prehistoric Roudan Cemetery, Hormuzgan province, plundering or
destroying the artefacts at the site.
Announcing this, Siamak Sarlak, an archaeologist, told ISNA Persian service that
the cemetery, which is one of the unique historical sites from the prehistoric
era, has been totally destroyed due to illegal excavations.
Head of National Museum’s Prehistoric Section said that some 180 artefacts
were identified during two rounds of excavations, conducted for the first time
in Minab and Roudan region after 1979.
The artefacts, dating back from 5,000 years ago and up to the Qajar era, have
suffered damages ranging from 10 to 100 percent, he noted.
Most of the damages were inflicted by smugglers from neighbouring provinces
whereas the locals are interested in preserving their local cultural and
historical identity, he said.
