Caves Found in Meshkinshahr

LONDON,
(CAIS) -- Archaeological studies at a historic site in Meshkinshahr, Ardebil
province, led to the discovery of prehistoric caves and objects. A team of
Russian and Iranian archeologists, who were conducting assessments in Ourami
region of Meshkinshahr, came across several caves and items dating back to Lower
and Middle Paleolithic.
Siavosh Abdollahi, a member of the team, said the discovered caves were once
homes of primitive humans. Stone tools retrieved from the site include blades
and objects used for hunting animals.
He added that the finding shed new light on the history of Ardebil province.
“The discovery made Russian experts believe that early humans settled in an
area beginning in African Continent through northwestern Iran and ending in
Siberia.“
The official noted that some objects would be transferred to Russia for further
examination by Russian archeologists.
Ourami region of Meshkinshahr is extended across plains of Aharchai and
Meshkinchia rivers.
The first season of excavations will begin next year (to start March 2007) by
Russian and Iranian archeologists.
