6th Phase of Jiroft Excavations Due

30 October 2007

LONDON, (CAIS) -- An archeological team consisting of Iranian and European archeologists will start the 6th phase of Jiroft excavations in Kerman province.

“A group of professional domestic and foreign archeologists is to start the sixth phase of archeological excavations in Konar Sandal, the small fortress, and Matout-Abad cemetery near Jiroft,” said archeologist Nader Soleimani of Iran Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization (ICHHTO).

The sixth phase of the excavations will also be carried out under the supervision of the Iranian archeologist, professor Yousef Majid-Zadeh.

A wide variety of evidence and ancient artifacts belonging to the fourth millennium BCE were traced while digging a channel beneath the Matot Abad cemetery.

The antiquities revealed that the history of the region goes back to the sixth millennium BCE.
