Road Construction Threatening Historical City of Darzin in Central Iran

Containing ruins of Sasanian and post-Sasanian structures, Darzin is among the historical sites of the city of Bam, which has previously been registered on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, the Persian service of CHN reported on Tuesday.

“The splendour of the city continued until the middle-ages in Iran,” said Shahram Zare’, who is the director of a team tasked to demarcate the city.

“There are at least three intact mud-brick castles depicting the transition of techniques and style of the Sasanian dynastic architecture to the periods that came afterwards,” Zare’ added.

The project officials previously rejected a proposal to relocate the highway in their plan. They argued that the modification would cost too much.

The project will not be carried out after a rescue excavation is done at the site, Zare’ said.

“The project officials should provide the Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Organisation with the necessary funds for the rescue excavation,” he noted.

Darzin is located 20 kilometres west of the city of Bam, in Kerman Province.
