Italy’s IsIAO seeking new methods for restoration of Persepolis

01 June 2009

LONDON, (CAIS) -- The Italian Institute for Africa and Orient (IsIAO) is currently carrying out a series of comprehensive studies to find new methods for restoration projects at Iran’s most important ancient site, Persepolis.

The research project is based on a contract signed between IsIAO and Iran’s Parsa and Pasargadae Foundation, Persepolis Executive Manager Maziar Kazemi told the Persian service of CHN on Monday.

“Over the past eight years, the restoration projects, except in some cases of emergency, have been halted on the Persepolis stone monuments due to the outdated methods used for these purposes,” he said.

“Thus, an IsIAO team has been assigned to find new methods for restoration of the Persepolis stone monuments,” he added.

The team has scrutinised previous restorations on the Xeroxes’ “Gates of All Nations” during their latest visit to Persepolis.

“At the present, Persepolis is not in a critical condition requiring immediate action, so we can wait for the team to complete its studies,” Kazemi noted.

IsIAO was established in 1995 as the result of the merging of Istituto Italiano per il Medio ed Estremo Oriente -- IsMEO (Italian Institute for Middle and Far East) with the Italo-African Institute -- IIA.

The institute is active in the field of cultural promotion aimed at fostering fruitful relations between Italy and the countries in the Middle-East, Africa and Asia.

IsMEO had conducted many restoration and excavation projects at Pasargadae and Persepolis before 1979.
