Destruction of Persepolis Stone Works Denied

05 June 2009

LONDON, (CAIS) -- An official of the Parsa and Pasargadae Research Centre (PPRC) denied the destruction of a stone from the staircase structure in the Council Hall at Persepolis last week.

A block of stone from the northern stairway structure of the Council Hall was removed in the course of a restoration project that had been taking place over the past few weeks, the official, who requested anonymity, told the Persian service of MNA.

The block was then reinstalled in-situ after deposits of sand and mud were cleaned from the fractures and crevices, he added.

A report quoting an anonymous source announced last week that a block of stone from the staircase of the Council Hall at Persepolis came crashing down and shattered as it was being lifted by a crane.

The official said that the stone block, which had previously broken into pieces over the years, was restored by the late Iranian expert Ali Sami before 1979.

Sami filled the cracks with cement, which expanded the fissures between fragments of the block. As a result, PPRC had to remove the fragments in order to clean the mortar and deposits of sand and mud from the cracks and joints.

“The stone has never been shattered. The fragments misled the unnamed source to speak in error,” the PPRC official said.
