Susa Satellite Mounds Destroyed

LONDON, (CAIS) -- Satellite mounds of the ancient city of Susa have been damaged by digging a deep trench in the region located in Khuzestan Province.

 

The trench, which is 1300 meters in length and about four meters in depth, has been excavated by commercial farming companies, the Persian service of CHN reported on Saturday.

 

“We were informed of the destruction by local residents of Hor township located near the mounds,” Khuzestan Cultural Heritage Lovers Society (Taryana) spokesman Mojtaba Gahestuni said.

“Afterwards, we took photos of the trench and prepared a report, which we handed over to the Khuzestan Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts Department (KCHTHD),” he added.

“Some of KCHTHD’s officials said that they had not been informed of the event. However, the Cultural Heritage Guard Command promised to pursue the case,” he explained.

Ancient shards, bricks and bones dating back to the Parthian era, the Sasanian dynasty and post-Sasanian period have been found in the earth from the trench.

“The damage to the mounds as a result of digging the trench is irreversible and should be an alarm bell ringing loudly for all of us concerning the other ancient sites located in the vicinity,” Gahestuni stated.

He said that many ancient sites have been damaged in several regions of Khuzestan over the past few weeks due to lack of sufficient oversight by the KCHTHD.
